When should you apply for another residence permit

If you have been granted a residence permit for a specific period for a specific purpose, for example to stay with your spouse, partner or with your parents, you are only entitled to this residence permit if you meet the conditions for that residence permit.

Even if you have been granted a temporary residence permit because you are studying, working or are an au pair, you are only entitled to this residence permit if you meet the conditions for that residence permit. If you no longer meet those conditions, you must apply for another residence permit.

Examples of change are:

  • You have a residence permit to stay with your spouse and you are divorced. Or you and your (registered) partner have separated and you no longer live together. If you do not meet the conditions of your residence permit, this will have consequences for your right of residence. You cannot extend your residence permit.

  • You have a residence permit for paid employment, but you no longer have a job. Sometimes you will be given a period of 3 months to look for another job.

  • You have a residence permit to stay with your parents, but you are now married, living separately or you have your own home.

  • You have a residence permit for study, but you have stopped your studies or you have graduated.
